The team

The students behind every installation.

Illuminate is run entirely by UNSW students across four distinct portfolios.

Portfolios

The four portfolios.

Every member joins a portfolio, and every project draws on all four.

01

Art & Design

Concept, form, and finish

Art & Design defines what the installation is before the engineering begins. The portfolio takes a concept through sketches, mood boards, colour studies, and scale models until there is a form to build, then stays with it through materials, finishes, and the graphics and signage around the finished piece. Members come from art, media, architecture, and engineering.

02

Mechanical

Structure, fabrication, and installation

Mechanical turns a design into a structure that holds up outdoors for the length of a season. The portfolio works in CAD, laser cutting, 3D printing, and fabrication, sizing frames and fixings for wind and weight, then plans how a build breaks down for transport, install, and pack-out. Most of the work happens in the workshop.

03

Electrical

Power, wiring, and light output

Electrical delivers the light itself. The portfolio designs power budgets and distribution, builds wiring looms and custom PCBs, and drives the addressable LEDs, fibre optics, and sensors that make a piece react to the people around it. The work runs from soldering and bench testing to festival-grade installations that run unattended every night for weeks.

04

Software

Firmware, interaction, and behaviour

Software writes the behaviour. The portfolio programs the microcontrollers behind each piece, maps sensor input to light output, and builds the animation systems that let the design team tune a look without touching code — the ripple that travels through the grasses in Resonance, the RFID handshake that changes the projection in Viscera. Experience ranges from first-year students learning embedded C upwards.
